Production Manager

Hybrid: Brooklyn, NY

Compensation:

The PM is a full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $65,000-$70,000. All full-time employees at BMP receive contributions to health insurance premiums. When touring with productions, BMP covers all travel/housing costs and provides per-diem for food and incidentals.

Description

PRODUCTION MANAGER

Beth Morrison Projects, one of the industry’s leading innovators in opera-theatre and music theatre, seeks a full-time Production Manager (PM) to join its team. The PM would support the technical execution of BMP’s world premiere and touring productions, ensuring high-quality execution of artistic work.

 

Core Responsibilities:

Reporting to BMP’s Director of Production, the PM’s responsibilities will include:

 

  • Production Advance:
  • With Director of Production, work with designers to develop designs to preserve artistic integrity while aligning with budgetary and functional limitations.
  • Source and procure scenic, lighting, costume, sound, and video materials and equipment, including working with external scene shops and rental vendors.
  • Organize and lead production meetings with the artistic company.
  • Manage the production advance schedule, including design deadlines, shop deadlines, and cartage.
  • With Director of Production, track and manage production budgets.
  • As needed, work with designers to adapt productions to new venues.
  • Production Oversight:
  • With Director of Production, Creative Producer, and Associate Producers, develop rehearsal schedules and ensure functional rehearsal rooms.
  • Oversee load-ins, technical rehearsals, and strike, managing stage labor as needed.
  • Travel with BMP shows on tour, representing BMP and collaborating with production/technical teams at partner organizations and venues.
  • Production Department Administration:
  • Oversee BMP’s off-site set storage and materials inventory
  • With Director of Production, oversee BMP’s season and multi-year development and production calendar
  • Actively contribute to internal production and planning meetings to ensure organization-wide understanding of needs.

 

As BMP operates on a hybrid model, the PM must be based in the greater New York City area or willing to relocate. Currently, employees are expected to work in-person at BMP’s Brooklyn office two days a week, and local travel to NYC-based rehearsal and/or performance locations is expected. As the PM, it is expected to tour nationally and internationally with BMP productions, significant overnight travel (4-8 weeks a year) is an expectation of this position.

 

Qualifications:

To succeed in this role, the following basic core competencies are expected:

 

  • Mastery of Technical Theater: Significant experience in all aspects of the technical execution of live performances (scenic, lighting, sound, costume, projection/video). Experience with touring productions, or adapting productions to multiple venues, preferred.
  • Design and Budget Management: Experience collaborating with directors, designers, and other colleagues to develop and execute artistically excellent designs within budgets.
  • Organizational Skills and Attention to Detail: Able to keep track of multiple different tasks, timelines, and responsibilities; a skilled multitasker; a commitment to ensuring every piece of information is complete and accurate.
  • Flexibility, Adaptability, and Problem-Solving Skills: A comfort within constantly evolving creative environments; the ability to work through complications and develop solutions in pursuit of a common goal.
  • Project and People Management Skills: The ability to consistently track and follow through on next steps, and to coordinate the efforts of senior colleagues, peers, and stage labor to ensure a project is on-track.
  • Computer and Equipment Skills: Experience with AutoCAD, VectorWorks, sound consoles, ETC, and lighting consoles; familiarity with Google Suite (especially Google Calendar) and Microsoft Office.
  • General competency on issues of equity and justice, especially as they relate to the performing arts.

 

While not required or expected, the following skills would be an asset for the PM:

 

·     Experience or interest in opera, new music, and/or contemporary performance.

 

 

Schedule:

BMP’s standard office hours are 10:30 AM-6:00 PM, Monday-Friday; however, some evening and weekend work is required for this role.

  • Final interviews with the Director of Production and other BMP staff, tentatively scheduled for the week of August 18, in-person at BMP’s Brooklyn office.
  • Expected start date of September 1.
