POSITION OVERVIEW
The Assistant Manager for Exhibition Media and Lighting contributes to the formation and maintenance of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s in-gallery experiences and digital companions that support the organization’s mission to remember the nearly 3,000 victims of the 9/11 attacks and all those who risked their lives to save others. This position is entrusted to create and sustain public-facing experiences that tells the story of 9/11 and the attacks’ ongoing ramifications thoughtfully and compassionately.
The Assistant Manager for Exhibition Media and Lighting is part of the Exhibitions department, which imagines and actualizes physical installations, audiovisual exhibits, digital interactives, audio guide experiences, and online storytelling platforms. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum has approximately 110,000 square feet of interpreted space including more than 90 media experiences, and it is the responsibility of the Exhibitions department to manage this content, ensure its daily integrity and performance, and plan for future use and relevance for Museum visitors.
This position works closely with audiovisual technicians, facilities specialists, exhibition developers as well as designers and staff in the Collection Departments to plan, maintain, and install audiovisual exhibits and exhibition lighting that meet exhibition curatorial goals and design intent. This position will also oversee the on-site work of external vendors that help support and maintain exhibition media and lighting. This position may require early morning or evening hours for installation and maintenance work. This is a full-time position that reports to the Director of Exhibition Production.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Exhibition Media
- Ensure exhibition media installations meet design intent through planning, quality control checks, and coordination with audiovisual team colleagues in Information Technology department.
- Moderate back-end content management systems for media pieces related to 9/11 victims, the rescue and recovery effort at Ground Zero, and user-generated content created onsite by visitors; as well as the Museum’s audio guide program.
- Manage vendors who provide annual cleaning, acoustic design, and tuning services.
- Establish maintenance schedules, budgets, meeting agendas, tracking documents, review processes, and other materials for audiovisual projects.
- Assemble content deliverables for staff, designers, and media producers for new or updated in-gallery media pieces and audio tour stops.
- Support institutional efforts to upgrade software and hardware as needed in collaboration with Information Technology colleagues, as well as migration of exhibition media content into a new Digital Asset Management system with Collections department colleagues.
Exhibition Lighting
- Ensure exhibition lighting installations meet design intent and conservation requirements through planning, aiming, focusing, and quality control checks.
- Maintain the lighting inventory and related materials used in exhibition lighting design.
- Replace fixtures and lamps using ladders and lifts as needed in collaboration with exhibition designers, conservators, and engineers.
- Conduct research on new lighting methodologies and new technologies, installation methods, and associated cost estimates.
- Coordinate with colleagues in Collections, Facilities, Operations, and other internal departments regarding lighting levels and electrical work in the exhibitions.
Other
- Participate in other exhibition development, planning, administrative, installation, project management, and special projects responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIRED SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZATIONAL EVENTS
- Participate in the Annual 5K Fundraiser and September 11th Commemoration.
- Assist with other special projects and events in support of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum mission, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIREMENT
- Previous work with media systems, lighting, design, installation, or moderation experience in a gallery, museum, theater, or cultural institution preferred.
- The ability to critically assess, develop, and evaluate museum exhibitions and other creative visitor strategies and experiences.
- Previous work experience in museums or cultural institutions is beneficial.
- Experience using ladders, lifts, and basic hand tools; and comfort working on lifts and/or be trained to work on lifts.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Methodical and attentive to detail.
- Acquaintance with a range of computer programs for office use.
- Ability to work on installations with sensitive content.

- The Exhibition Designer is part of the Exhibitions department. The team is comprised of 11 individuals with different functions and tenures within the organization.
