Description

The Brooklyn Rail seeks a full-time Ad Sales Director to lead and grow our advertising revenue across both print and digital platforms. Today, the Rail’s advertising base is primarily concentrated in the art world. We are looking for someone who can both maintain and deepen those existing relationships and drive expansion into new sectors. The greatest headroom for growth is in digital advertising. This is a senior, autonomous role for a self-starter who can build and own a diversified, high-growth revenue program.

About the Brooklyn Rail:

The Brooklyn Rail’s mission is to provide an independent forum for arts, culture, and politics throughout New York City and beyond.

Founded in October 2000, the Rail publishes a journal 10 times a year and distributes it for free in print and online, and hosts a live weekday conversation series. The Rail further fulfills its mission by curating art exhibitions, panel discussions, reading series, and film screenings that reflect the complexity and inventiveness of the city’s artistic and cultural landscape. With two million annual readers globally, the Rail’s audience is culturally engaged, spanning the visual arts, performing arts, film, design, fashion, architecture, and literature, making it a compelling platform for advertisers across many sectors.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and grow existing art world advertising relationships while simultaneously developing new advertiser relationships across new sectors, with particular focus on performing arts (theater, dance, opera, music), book publishers, media and streaming platforms, design, architecture, fashion, and other creative industries.
  • Grow and manage print advertising sales across all 10 annual print editions, with deep knowledge of print ad formats, specs, and production timelines.
  • Drive digital advertising and identify new digital formats, aid in setting pricing, and build digitally-focused packages.
  • Monitor, interpret, and report on all digital ad performance metrics, including impressions, CTR, open rates, and audience data.
  • Develop sophisticated, industry-specific advertising packages tailored to senior marketing decision-makers across industries.
  • Execute contracts, maintain account records, and submit information for accurate billing and record-keeping.
  • Coordinate delivery of ad materials to print production teams. Upload all digital content. Proof and approve all placements.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of advertising sales experience, with a demonstrated ability to prospect and close new business independently.
  • Proven track record selling both print and digital advertising; fluency with a full suite of digital ad formats including display, newsletter, and sponsored content.
  • Experience selling to senior marketing, communications, and brand decision-makers across multiple industries.
  • Background in or strong familiarity with the arts, performing arts, and/or cultural sector strongly preferred. Candidates from other industries with genuine enthusiasm for the Rail’s mission are also encouraged to apply.
  • Existing relationships with potential advertisers beyond the gallery/museum world, particularly in performing arts, publishing, media/streaming, design, fashion, and other compatible industries, a significant plus.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Highly self-directed and entrepreneurial; comfortable operating as the sole dedicated sales professional in the organization.
  • Strong command of digital analytics tools and the ability to translate data into client-facing insights and internal strategy. This person will be the primary lens through which the Rail understands the performance of its digital ad program, so fluency and ownership here is non-negotiable.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, GA4, Airtable, Slack, and Mailchimp.
  • Knowledge of print production requirements and ad file specifications.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in proposals, contracts, ad specs, and client communications
  • This is a high-performance role with an expectation to hit the ground running and drive results within the first quarter.

This position is hybrid and requires frequent travel throughout New York City to meet with clients.

The Brooklyn Rail is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to building and maintaining an open and inclusive work environment.
