Description
The Pit is looking for additional freelance art handlers to work with. Art Handlers are responsible for tasks including the safe transportation, installation, deinstallation, and packing of artworks for exhibitions, fairs, and gallery operations. The gallery contacts art handlers several times a month, offering short-term gigs.
Responsibilities:
- Report to the registrar or gallery owner.
- Safely and securely transport artwork between the gallery, artist studios, shippers, and clients.
- Assist with installing and deinstalling exhibitions or fair booths, making sure artwork is properly displayed and mounted.
- Properly pack and unpack artwork.
- Handle artwork of varying sizes, mediums, and weights with care.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace in the gallery and storage areas.
- Assist with maintaining inventory records of artworks being handled or stored by labeling artworks properly.
- Assist photographer with documentation of artworks
Requirements:
- Prior experience handling artwork in a gallery, museum, or other art-related environment preferred.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move artwork (up to 60 lbs) safely.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of proper packing, transportation, and installation techniques for different types of art.
- Flexibility and availability to work on an as-needed, on-call basis.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Must be comfortable with driving a 15' box truck locally.
- Minimum 3 years of art handling experience
