Andrew Kreps Gallery is currently seeking a Part-time Preparator for immediate hire. The ideal candidate will have previous experience with exhibition installations and de-installations, co-managing local storage, shipping and inventory, packing and storage of artwork, and general maintenance of the appearance of the gallery.
This position works closely with the entire gallery staff to ensure the artwork's safety and the galley's operational needs. Proficiency with art database systems such as Artlogic is preferred. The role requires exceptional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. The candidate should be a competent team player with knowledge of contemporary art.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Assist the Head Preparator with the installation of all exhibitions in the gallery
• Work in conjunction with the Registrar for the management and transport of on-site storage and storage at our local facility in addition to day-to-day transfers of works to and from the gallery
• Provide extra support for handling inbound and outbound crates
• Proactively inspect the packing and storage safety of all work
• Provide building and fabrication of basic display elements and pedestals
• Responsible for the handling, packing, and inspecting of artworks in and out of the gallery
• Work with Head Preparator to install client viewings and manage the installation of gallery viewing rooms
• Occasional facilitation with clients and collectors on delivery, installation and/or de-installation
• Rudimentary building maintenance, including, but not limited to: meeting with utility vendors; daily garbage collection/disposal; keeping an eye on building contractors while on site; monitoring smooth operation of building functions
• Initiate upkeep of gallery appearance and work with Gallery Assistant to ensure it looks its best
• Perform routine exhibition maintenance such as paint touch-ups and light cleaning
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree
• 2-4 years experience in a museum or gallery
• Drivers License
• Extensive experience in exhibition installation
• Must be highly detail-oriented, proactive, and organized
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and work on multiple projects at once is a must
• Willingness and ability to work off-site and additional hours as needed
• Familiarity with condition reporting best practices and the production of technical documentation
• Experience with power tools
• Experience driving sprinter vans or 15ft. box trucks is a plus
• Experience with gantries and man-lifts a plus
• Experience professionally interfacing with clients and directors
• Knowledge of gallery-related programs such as Adobe Suite and Artlogic, a plus
Position hours are Monday - Wednesday, 10 am to 6 pm.
