Description

Opportunity Overview:

The Kendrick Arts Group is a nonprofit organization that stewards composer estates’ catalogs and grantmaking initiatives. Formerly operating as JMK Foundation Services, we have promoted the legacies and music of significant American composers and administered grant programs on behalf of private foundations that support the performance and creation of American music for nearly two decades. Our team—comprising an array of classical music professionals—operates on a remote and hybrid basis. We are a close-knit organization that values positive working relationships, consensus-building, clear and consistent communication, personal accountability, reliability, and quality of life. We hold ourselves, each other, and our clients in the highest regard.

We specifically understand and support the artistic pursuits of our team members, offering the flexibility that working musicians need to maintain their performance careers while building professional expertise in arts administration.

If you are passionate about American classical music, possess strong organizational and communication skills, and thrive in both independent and collaborative environments, we want to meet you!

As our Communications Specialist, you will develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies to elevate the composers and artists we support and promote our clients' grant programs. You will manage digital communications across multiple foundation and composer websites and social media channels, creating compelling content that showcases the legacies of our composers and the impact of our clients’ funding. While this role may involve occasional press outreach, its primary focus is content development and promotional communications. Further, as a member of The Kendrick Arts Group team, your role will evolve to support broader business development needs including managing the company's website and developing social media channels.

You will report to the Head of Foundation Services and work closely with our grants and editorial teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You'll develop and maintain a consistent and responsive social media presence for multiple constituents across multiple platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, Threads, etc.).
  • You'll manage, maintain, and create content for websites for multiple constituents and liaise with web developers for site issues and improvements.
  • You'll serve as first point of contact for incoming correspondence, managing info@ accounts and contact form submissions for each website (currently 4-5) and routing inquiries to other team members, as appropriate.
  • You'll attend team, board, and committee meetings (both in-person and videoconference) as requested, for which you will prepare materials and report on your activity.
  • You'll occasionally support tasks outside your primary responsibilities as needed by the team.
  • You'll occasionally be required to work in the office (located in the Flatiron District in Manhattan) to participate in foundation meetings and collaborative projects. While rare for this role, you may be asked to work weekends occasionally; compensatory time off is provided.

Composer Promotion:

  • You'll develop and implement strategies and create platform-specific content to promote the legacies of composers in The Kendrick Arts Group portfolio.
  • You'll support recording releases, marketing campaigns, and other promotional activities for composer works.
  • You'll collaborate with clients’ contractors (ex. Managing Editor, Consulting Musicologist), along with publishers and board subcommittees, to ensure accuracy and scholarly integrity and to align on overall promotion strategies.
  • You'll monitor industry news to identify opportunities to amplify composer-related activity in alignment with broader promotion strategies. You'll update website calendars with performance information received from publishers, presenters, and other sources.
  • You'll track, analyze, and report on website traffic, social media engagement, and other relevant metrics.

Business Development Support:

  • You will build and develop The Kendrick Arts Group's collateral and establish company brand presence on various platforms as we grow. You'll create materials to support client acquisition and business development initiatives.
  • You'll collaborate with the rest of The Kendrick Arts Group team on business development and relationship-building activities including industry outreach and professional networking events.

Grant Program Communications:

  • You'll collaborate with the grants team to develop communications strategies in support of grant programs, including social media channels, email newsletters, and news for the foundation websites.
  • You'll develop grant recipient success stories and impact content showcasing how funding supports contemporary music in collaboration with the grants team.
  • You'll track, analyze, and report on social media engagement and email campaign performance.

Qualifications:

  • You are self-directed and enjoy working in close collaboration with a small, dynamic team of experienced professionals.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills and pay exceptional attention to accuracy and detail.
  • You demonstrate deep knowledge of American classical music and an ability to effectively communicate its value and impact to diverse audiences.
  • You can read Western musical notation and have familiarity with the creative and professional landscape of contemporary composers, performers, and producers.
  • You have 2–3 years of experience developing and implementing social media and communications strategies, preferably in arts or nonprofit organizations.
  • You are comfortable working with content management systems like WordPress and ProcessWire. (Specific training for day-to-day site updates will be provided. Technical development and site infrastructure are handled by an outside web developer.)
  • You have experience developing and working with style guides.
  • You have a bachelor's degree in classical music, communications, or a related field, or comparable work experience.
  • You are proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Slack, Asana, Zoom, and similar office applications.

If you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to still consider submitting an application.

Salary Range:

The salary range for this role is $70,000–$75,000 commensurate with qualifications. Performance and salary reviews are conducted annually at the end of each calendar year.

This is an exempt position.
