Casey Kaplan, established in 1995, seeks a Head Preparator.
Primary work includes exhibition installation and deinstallation, packaging works, overseeing inventory, and managing part-time and freelance handlers. The candidate should be a leader with 6 plus years of experience in a fine art installation position, preferably in a New York gallery or museum. The Head Preparator will work with and support the Gallery Owner, Directors and will collaborate closely with Registrars.
Our ideal applicant is a self-starter who runs with projects with confidence and care, exhibits excellent communication methods while maintaining a good attitude and eagerness to be a part of a small community in which each member takes pride in their day-to-day outputs.
Primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Prepare, install, maintain, and de-install on-site exhibitions and Gallery presentations at art fairs, requiring knowledge of material and fabrication processes.
- Manage exhibition and installation schedules, tracking costs and working closely with Directors on all exhibition needs.
- Responsible for art fair installations and booth designs via 3D modeling software.
- Oversee exhibition-based construction needs, such as wall fabrication.
- Communicate with Gallery artists in sourcing and fabricating material for upcoming exhibitions and projects.
- Generate installation instructions for every incoming artwork.
- Support condition reporting needs, in collaboration with Registration team, who are responsible for generating reports.
- Organize and maintain artwork inventory storage on-site and collaborate with off-site storage facilities.
- Collaborate with Registration team to prepare and secure incoming and outgoing shipments.
- Oversee part-time art handlers, as well as hire and manage freelance art handlers as needed.
- Install artwork(s) as needed for viewings and photography.
- Manage organizational aspects of the Gallery’s back office.
- Perform general maintenance and liaise with Gallery owner and Gallery architect on matters involving the upkeep of our viewing and office spaces.
Qualifications required:
- Excellent communication skills and a commitment and desire to working in a team-oriented environment.
- Digital rendering skills are required in software programs such as SketchUp or Blender.
- Knowledge of installation hardware, including modifications to the backs of paintings, assembling sculptural objects and mounting works into crates.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- General knowledge of construction processes and power tools is preferred.
- General knowledge of audio, film and light systems is preferred.
- Ability to travel internationally.
- 6 years art handling experience.
Salary range: $80,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience.
