About Midori & Friends:

Founded in 1992 by world-renowned violinist Midori, Midori & Friends, provides transformative tuition-free music education, access to live performances, and leadership development for underserved youth.

About the Play to Learn Program:

Play to Learn provides instruction to students in grades K-12 in strings, percussion, woodwinds, and chorus, both during and after school. Our teaching artists work with students to deliver tailored instruction, build knowledge, and develop skills for up to 20 weeks during the academic year. Students showcase their accomplishments in culminating group performances for their families and school communities. While performances represent concrete goals for students to work toward and achieve, they also cultivate positive arts experiences for themselves, peers, parents, and friends. Play to Learn follows the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and Blueprint for Teaching & Learning in Music: to Create, Perform, Respond, and Connect. By the program’s end, students have tangible musical skills to share with their family and school community.

Our Teaching Artists:

Our Teaching Artists provide positive, engaging, multi-faceted, high-quality musical experiences that nurture the development of students’ musical and collaborative skills and creative abilities. Midori & Friends Teaching Artists are graduates of the country’s top conservatories and music education programs. They are not only fine musicians, but are also passionate educators who seek to enrich and inspire students through music.

Teaching Artist Vacancies:

Midori & Friends is seeking part-time teaching artists specializing in Guitar, Violin, Ukulele, Percussion, and Chorus. Residencies take place during and after school hours. It is anticipated that most student participants in these residencies will be at a beginner or intermediate performing level.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a degree in music and/or music education and 3-5 years of teaching experience with beginner students in grades PreK-12. Teaching experience in New York City public schools is preferred. Teaching Artists should have creative approaches to teaching music while integrating the Midori & Friends Milestones, and an ability to motivate and provide high-quality learning experiences for students of all backgrounds, abilities, and interests. All selected Teaching Artists must be fingerprinted with the New York City Department of Education and members of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 802.
