The Development Officer leads Epiphany’s efforts in fundraising, grant management, and donor relations. The Development Officer will work alongside the Editor in Chief, Managing Editor, and Publisher, and in connection with the Board and the Digital Marketing Manager to generate contributions for the magazine from private donors and obtain funding via grants. Responsibilities include cultivating new donors and maintaining donor relationships; proposing and overseeing fundraising initiatives, including events and marketing campaigns; researching grant opportunities and developing grant writing strategy.


The Development Officer should be an independent self-starter with a love of literature and a strong relationship to the New York literary community—an extroverted, social person with an interest in networking and a passion for helping grow the resources of a nonprofit literary magazine, who demonstrates an understanding of Epiphany’s image and core values.


This position reports directly to the Publisher to ensure that all activities align with Epiphany’s mission: to give a voice to talented and innovative writers of the 21st century, support both emerging and established writers regardless of their location, and explore a wide range of writing styles, from experimental to traditional.


The Development Officer is a salaried, part-time position based in New York City.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cultivate Donors: Identifying and liaising with potential donors to encourage contributions to our organization.Develop and implement strategies to engage and incentive current and potential donors.
  • Manage Board and Donor Engagement: Develop and implement strategies to engage board members and new donors. Assist the Publisher and Chairman of the Board in preparing for Board of Directors meetings. Work with the EIC and ME to define staff needs and identify and match board members to meet those needs.
  • Manage Fundraising Initiatives: Work with the Editor in Chief and Managing Editor to plan and execute fundraising events, with assistance, and coordinate with Digital Marketing Manager to develop web, social media, in-person, advertising or other marketing campaigns to increase donorship.
  • Research and Secure Grants: Identify potential grant opportunities and develop strategies for pitching Epiphany in grants based on up to date understandings of what judging committees are seeking.
  • Maintain Database: Oversee the organization’s fundraising database to track contributed income, ensure proper accounting coding, generate clear reports, and manage automated responses and mailings.
  • Maintain Regulatory Compliance: Maintain compliance with relevant government regulations for state and federal entities.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interest in networking, socializing, and making connections with potential and current donors to cultivate relationships and secure significant donations.
  • Passion for literature and an understanding of literary brand identity.
  • Strong organization and coordination skills. The ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with diverse individuals effectively.
  • Proactive attitude with a willingness to take initiative and prioritize deadlines.
  • Ability to advocate for own needs, delegate to assistants and interns, and “manage up” to peer staff and supervisors.
  • Familiarity with the landscape of nonprofit arts fundraising.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information discreetly.
  • Experience in development,  donor relations, sales, and grant management are particularly welcome.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Epiphany has a collaborative work environment that encourages teamwork and the open sharing of ideas and opinions.
  • The salary for this part-time freelance position is $20,000 annually, and the estimated flexible schedule is 10 to 15 hours per week.
  • Epiphany publishes twice a year (in print) and approximately once a week online.
  • The role may require occasional evening or weekend work depending on project deadlines or special events.
