Description

Assistant Editor

Jewish Currents is seeking a full-time Assistant Editor to support our editorial work. The application deadline is Tuesday, July 15th at 9am ET, with an estimated start date of September 1st.

Position

The Assistant Editor is an early career position, perfect for someone with a few years of experience in the field who already has strong editorial instincts about what makes a good story and how to bring it to life on the page, and is looking for an opportunity to deepen their skills. This person will assist senior editors in the production and publication of articles across genre, while also overseeing work that they have commissioned and brought to publication. Ideally, they are a generalist, as comfortable editing short news and analysis pieces as they are conversations or reviews. They will play a role in shaping our coverage, and should plan to be an active participant in pitch meetings.

Who We Are

Founded in 1946, Jewish Currents is a magazine committed to the rich tradition of thought, activism, and culture on the Jewish left and the left more broadly. We cover a wide variety of topics, including the uses and misuses of antisemitism, the inner workings of Jewish communal organizations, Israel/Palestine politics on the ground and internationally, race and racialization, strategies and horizons of American left movements, the global rise of the far right, diasporic cultural expression, labor, climate, incarceration, immigration, and feminism.

You do not have to be Jewish to be right for this job, and we invite candidates from a broad range of backgrounds who are invested in and familiar with our work.

Responsibilities

  • Editing pieces for print and web, as well as letters to the editor
  • Bottom-lining the weekly Friday newsletter by commissioning, soliciting, and editing contributions
  • Managing the submissions inbox
  • Other forms of editorial support as needed, including cleaning up conversation transcripts; research or reporting support; proofing and copy editing; and more

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in journalism, preferably as a junior editor
  • Experience as a writer or reporter
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Attention to detail on the page
  • Strong initiative and comfort with self-direction
  • Ability to multitask and to thrive in fast-paced environments with shifting tasks and priorities
  • Knowledge of our beats, be it (Jewish) art and culture; left politics; or Israel/Palestine

Location and Team Structure

This position will be part of the editorial team, with a preference for candidates based in New York City. The position is currently primarily remote, with the plan of moving to a hybrid-style office in 2026.

This is a position covered under the Writers Guild of America, East Collective Bargaining Agreement.
