Studio Manager for Photographer Mariana Cook

Description

We are seeking a highly organized, detail-focused Studio Manager to support fine art photographer Mariana Cook. This is a hands-on role in a home studio that requires both administrative precision and experience handling fine art. The ideal candidate is a proactive, visually-oriented person with a “no task too small” attitude and excellent communication skills. It is an ideal opportunity for an individual who thrives in a multifaceted role supporting the creative process.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Studio & Administrative Support (Approximately 60% of the role)

  • Maintain and update FileMaker databases (contacts, image archive)
  • Draft and send newsletters; update website and artist resume
  • Coordinate print sales, licensing requests, and gallery/client correspondence
  • Label, organize, and archive prints, negatives, and related documents
  • Prepare work for viewing, framing, shipping, and storage, this might include dry mounting photographs. 
  • Coordinate framing, packing, and shipping logistics
  • Assist the artist in preparing for meetings and studio visits


Project & Publication Management (Approximately 25% of the role)

  • Help with book publications (editing, proofreading, transcriptions)
  • Coordinate special projects and manage freelancers as needed


General Office & Household Tasks (Approximately 15% of the role)

  • Answer emails and phone calls
  • Receive/send packages; order office supplies
  • Coordinate studio maintenance and tech support needs
  • Occasionally assist with light personal tasks related to household logistics
  • Work collaboratively with other studio staff to keep a tidy environment 


Qualifications:

  • 3+ years working as a registrar, conservator, arts administrator, or studio assistant, ideally with demonstrable experience working independently 
  • Excellent writing and communication skills 
  • Outstanding organizational abilities and a sharp eye for detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and PowerPoint, Dropbox, Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, and Photoshop
  • Experience working independently, managing projects, and employees/freelance workers
  • Be able to lift 25 lb boxes and assist in moving large framed photographs. 


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity with running a social media account is a plus
  • Knowledge of FileMaker or a similar database program


This is a part-time and in-person position. The studio is located on the Upper West Side. There will be an expectation for 28 to 30 hours per week of work. Three days per week will be in person with some remote hours as needed on the other days.


We are looking for someone interested in remaining in this role long-term, so retention bonuses and annual salary increases are part of the position. This is also a role where a candidate could grow to assist in curatorial decisions.


This is not an entry-level position, and prior experience in a similar environment is required. An interest in art and an ability to handle artworks are a must.
