SALARY & BENEFITS

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Brooklyn Children’s Museum seeks a Supervisor of STEM Learning to oversee science content for education programs throughout the Museum. The Supervisor will create and facilitate public program offerings in the Museum’s maker space, develop program schedules, set standards for program delivery, and train and manage Museum Educators delivering science programs.
This is a highly collaborative position that requires effective leadership and participation on cross-functional teams, as well as frequent inter-departmental communication and cooperation. Successful candidates will be organized project supervisors; creative thinkers and problem solvers; strong verbal and written communicators; and dynamic team leaders. Ability to work with diverse audiences and willingness to interact with the public are essential. BCM seeks candidates who share our commitment to creating a respectful, collaborative, purpose-driven and joyful work culture. The position supervises 4-8 part-time direct reports.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative natural science and STEM programs including but not limited to assets from the Museum’s collection of cultural objects and natural science specimens and live animals. These include rotating public programs in BCM’s Nature’s Engineer’s maker space, school programs, and offsite programs.
• Provide direct management support and supervision of all Educators facilitating programs in Nature’s Engineers, BCM’s maker space. This includes conducting regular check-ins, delivering performance feedback, supporting professional development, and participating in hiring and onboarding decisions for the team.
• Contribute to the development of aquaria and animal programs, seeking opportunities to integrate relevant cultural elements and collections into these programs.
• Manage program-related resources and materials for Nature’s Engineers, including supply inventory, ordering within assigned budgets, and tracking usage to ensure cost-effective delivery of STEM programming.
• Opportunity to represent the Museum at conferences and other professional networking opportunities.
• Other Education department and Museum-wide responsibilities as needed.
• Facilitate programs when staff call out and support programs on heavy visitation days.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Natural Sciences or Environmental Sciences, Animal Husbandry, Museum Education or related field, with a focus on science programming
• 5+ years working in a museum or other informal education setting
• Demonstrated supervisorial experience
• Experience writing lesson plans, developing and delivering programs based on interdisciplinary and science themes for early childhood-age audiences
• Exemplary verbal and written communication
• Ability and desire to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team and be open to constructive feedback and exchange
• Desire to interact with young children and families, and commitment to accessible learning for children of all abilities.
• Ability to work independently.
• Knowledge of and passion for exploring the STEM and engineer topics
• Exude a DIY and asset-based spirit
• Warmth, positive energy, and a sincere love of working with children and families
• Familiarity with Brooklyn and its diverse communities preferred
• Active interest and commitment to social justice initiatives, racial equity and inclusion
• Proficient with Macs, PCs, Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and Dropbox
SCHEDULE
28 hours on-site weekly. Hours include Thursday and Friday 2:00pm-5:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 9:30am-5:30pm. Additional hours to be determined with supervisor.
