Description
A commercial gallery for modern and contemporary art is seeking an experienced and proactive Warehouse Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of their Long Island City warehouse. This role is responsible for overseeing the storage and movement of artwork, managing a team of warehouse art handlers, and ensuring the facility is maintained to the highest standards of care, safety, and efficiency. The ideal candidate has prior leadership experience in art storage or handling and thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise daily warehouse operations, including art handling, packing, storage, internal transfers, and maintenance
- Provide leadership to the Warehouse Art Handling team, including scheduling, workflow oversight, and performance feedback
- Ensure proper intake, labeling, shipping documentation, and release of artworks in close coordination with the Registration and Logistics teams
- Oversee all artwork movement tracking and storage location management, ensuring updates are made in real time to internal systems
- Maintain a high standard of organization, cleanliness, and safety throughout the facility
- Develop and implement efficient storage solutions that optimize space and accessibility
- Oversee facility maintenance, cleaning, repairs, vendor management, and preventative maintenance for the warehouse in coordination with Facilities team
- Responsible to maintain a high level of security at all times and serve as initial point of contact for security and fire alarm system
- Manage the warehouse’s delivery and installation schedule, ensuring timely execution of internal and external transport requests
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and gallery protocols, including regular checks and staff training
- Lead planning and readiness for peak periods, installations, and special projects
- Serve as a key point of contact between warehouse operations and other departments
Skills & Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in fine art handling or warehouse operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role
- Strong knowledge of art storage, packing, and handling protocols across a variety of media
- Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and leadership skills
- Clear and professional communication, both written and verbal
- Experience managing schedules, priorities, and cross-functional workflows
- Proficiency with inventory management systems and documentation tools
- Forklift certification and experience operating warehouse equipment preferred
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects and to lead by example in a hands-on environment
- Availability to work additional hours during installation periods or special projects
- Ability to travel between the warehouse and gallery location in New York, as needed
