Preparator

P.P.O.W is seeking a full-time Preparator for immediate hire. Applicants should demonstrate one year of prior experience in a fast-paced environment, enthusiasm for the gallery program, and passion for working collaboratively with artists.

The Preparator reports to the Head Preparator and will be an important part of a dedicated team, including two part-time preparators, and a trusted network of freelancers. This role is dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient handling, installation, and storage of artworks in all media.

The Preparator will also work collaboratively with the gallery Directors and Registrarial team on all aspects of the gallery’s complex operations and should actively contribute to a weekly all-staff meeting and a weekly logistics meeting concerning shipping schedules, exhibition production, and special projects. 

The position primarily entails the following duties:

• Assist in the installation of gallery exhibitions across two spaces
• Assist with regular collections from and deliveries to artist’s studios, client residences, and storage facilities
• Pack works in all media for local, domestic, and international shipment, including all art fair presentations
• Monitor inter-office email correspondence
• Assist in regular installations for scheduled and immediate client viewings
• Assist in maintaining accurately cataloged inventory of onsite and offsite storage
• Condition reporting of incoming and outgoing works in collaboration with the Registrarial department
• Ensure a thoroughly organized workspace and maintain a supply of necessary materials
• Assist with day-to-day facility maintenance of two locations, prioritizing polished exhibition spaces

A minimum of one year prior experience in a comparable position at a fast-paced gallery is highly desired. Comparable experience at a museum, fine art shipper, or storage management facility will also be considered.

Additional requirements include:

• Valid driver’s license, with experience driving cargo vans and two-axel trucks
• Ability to lift heavy objects
• Knowledge of best practices for works in all media
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Rigorous work ethic and a proactive mentality

Typical hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 10am to 6pm. The position will occasionally require work outside of regular gallery hours, which is compensated with corresponding days off.
