Description

 

This position will support an initiative between Pratt Institute, School of Continuing and Professional Studies and NJ Department of Corrections (NJDOC)/Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women. The program's mission is to provide vocational job training and, upon release, future skilled employment for New Jersey State incarcerated persons (IP's). This particular initiative will provide instruction in various aspects of textile/fashion design via coursework designed to familiarize the IP's with the fundamentals of fashion design and the technology required for today's fashion industry.Schedule:Monday - Friday 7am to 3pm/35 hour work week. 10 months per year (2 semesters of 5 months each) Temporary Position: 1 year (10 months) with opportunity to renew for 2 additional years. Examples of Duties

 

The full-time instructional aide will work closely with a virtual Pratt Institute fashion design instructor. The aide will work in the correctional facility to provide day-to-day instruction and to translate the virtual classroom instruction into practical application. The classroom will consist of approximately 12 - 20 incarcerated person participants (IP) selected through an internal vetting process to ensure participant commitment to the training program. The program is intended to have a mix of mid- and longer-term sentence IP participants to achieve a level of "train the trainer" status and allow longer-term participants to aid in training newer participants.The classroom aide will work closely with the instructor to ensure the success of the program and the students. The aide will be expected to lend support to participants' learning needs while following policies and procedures set forth by the correctional facility.

 

Qualifications

 

The aide must be proficient in various fashion design aspects, including fashion design concepts, pattern development, construction, grading specifications, fabric properties, fitting, tech specification packets, hardware, software, and hands on sewing. The aide should have a working knowledge or aptitude to quickly learn direct-to-fabric printing, heat transfer/sublimation print and computer-to-embroidery machine knowledge. The aide will need some knowledge of specific equipment used in the classroom. Equipment list is yet to be determined.Additional Requirements:

 

• The candidate must have personal transportation

• The candidate will be required to complete and pass a NJDOC background review.

• A candidate with a Bachelors' degree and Fashion Design experience is preferred.

• Experience working with marginalized populations is preferred but not required.

• Attention to student learning needs is required.
