We are currently hiring Art Handlers for positions at our North American headquarters in New York City. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, attention to detail and a willingness to learn. The position is full-time temporary, beginning immediately and continuing for two months, with the possibility of being extended.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary responsibility of the Art Handling Technician is the proper handling and packing of artworks ranging from paintings, works on paper, sculpture to design objects, antiques and furniture. Duties include using the appropriate methods for moving, storage and preparation for transport of Art and Design Objects via air, sea and road freight to various national and international destinations. The Art Handling Technician is also responsible for the safe handling, packing, unpacking, crating and proper loading of each piece while following company policies and best practices. This position is located at our Long Island City warehouse facility. The position reports to the Operations/Transport Manager.
REPONSIBILITIES:
• Follow Company Policies and Industry Best Practices for the safe Handling, Movement, Storage and Loading of a wide range of Art and Design Objects
• Work with Crew Leader and Crew Members for the Installation/De-Installation of artwork, Antiques and High-End Furniture and Objects as required
• Work with Crew Leader and crew members for completion of the daily schedule including: Warehouse movements; Receiving and Releasing Property; Loading and Unloading Air, Road and Sea Freight Shipments; Inspecting and Condition Reporting of Items as set forth by the Assistant Warehouse Manager
• Accurately complete paperwork and ensure that each item, package and crate are labeled accurately and appropriately with relevant item labels and location information
• Work with crew leader and crew members to generate accurate and descriptive condition reports and photo documentation when necessary
• Communicate concerns, issues and/or problems with condition reports (condition of items), packing/crating orders, schedules, deadlines, etc. with management and account holders
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment onsite and on company trucks/vehicles.
• Maintain confidentiality of clients’ personal property and privacy
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Strong Work Ethic
• Interest in Art and Design
2-5 years experience working as an art handler in a gallery, warehouse or shipping company environment
• Ability to learn how to efficiently and safely handle, move, pack, unpack, load and unload sensitive and valuable artworks, design objects and furniture
• Team Player with the ability to work well in a diverse, fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently independently and as part of a team
• Ability to learn a variety of Art Handling, Storage and Shipping techniques and methods
• Ability to learn a variety of art installation techniques
• Ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds
• Creativity, flexibility as well as problem solving skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Attention to detail
