Description

Triple Canopy, a nonprofit arts magazine based in Manhattan, seeks a part-time Grant Writer.

Triple Canopy publishes and presents work by artists, writers, and researchers, primarily through the magazine’s digital platform but also in conversations, performances, videos, books, and podcasts, among other media and experiences. Collaborating with contributors from the conception to the realization of projects, Triple Canopy navigates the digital and physical realms where ideas and audiences take shape.

The ideal candidate is highly organized and a strong writer with a flair for translating complex ideas into clear, compelling language. As part of the development team and in consultation with editors, the Grant Writer will manage existing grants, seek out new opportunities, and create proposals for the support of Triple Canopy’s work by foundations, patrons, and other potential sponsors. We’re looking for someone who derives pleasure and sustenance from art and literature, and shares our belief in magazines as testing grounds for new ideas, bringing together disparate forms of expression (and audiences).

As part of the development team, the Grant Writer will work to accomplish the following:

  • Develop Triple Canopy’s institutional income strategy in collaboration with the Director and lead its implementation;
  • Write grant proposals and reports for institutional funders on behalf of Triple Canopy;
  • With support from the bookkeeper and Director, prepare budgets and expense reports for grant purposes;
  • Manage Triple Canopy’s grants calendar and ensure the proper and timely completion of all grant-related materials;
  • Conduct research on prospective institutional supporters, corporate sponsors, and other funders;
  • Work with Development Manager to maintain records of institutional donations and ensure that all grants (and grant payments) are accurately logged in the database Kindful;
  • Maintain communications with institutional donors, with support from the development and editorial staff;
  • In collaboration with editorial staff, write and adapt narratives about new programs and initiatives for prospective supporters;
  • Craft and revise language for proposals, appeals, and acknowledgment letters under the direction of the Development Manager;
  • Support the administrative operations of the development team as needed;
  • Establish and maintain a holistic understanding of Triple Canopy’s mission and program.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • At least two years of grant-writing experience and a record of securing grants. (We are also open to candidates with strong writing skills who are experienced in adapting copy for various audiences and stakeholders);
  • An understanding of trends, policies, and programs in the field of arts funding, as well as an enthusiastic engagement with contemporary art, literature, and media;
  • Excellent editing, research, and organizational skills;
  • Facility with financial information and budgets;
  • Strong database and computer skills, including proficiency with project management platforms, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with donor database software is a plus;
  • A strong code of ethics, ability to exercise discretion, and excellent judgment when handling sensitive information.
