Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and organized Fitting Department Manager to lead and support our team of skilled art fitters. This role is responsible for overseeing all fitting and final assembly operations, ensuring the highest level of craftsmanship and adherence to conservation standards across each project.
The ideal candidate brings deep hands-on experience in high-end custom framing and has strong leadership skills, a collaborative mindset, and an eye for detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, train, and support a team of professional art fitters
- Oversee daily fitting schedules, quality control, and deadline adherence
- Ensure archival materials and conservation best practices are followed at all times
- Review frame designs and technical drawings to confirm proper execution and fit
- Troubleshoot complex fitting challenges (e.g., oversized pieces, acrylic boxes, special mounts)
- Lead the installation of glazing, spacers, fillets, and stretcher work
- Coordinate closely with design, finishing, and art handling departments
- Implement process improvements for efficiency, consistency, and safety
- Maintain inventory of materials (glass, spacers, adhesives, etc.)
- Support client-specific needs, ensuring premium outcomes and service
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in high-end custom framing, art fitting, or conservation framing
- Deep understanding of archival materials, glazing, hinging, and presentation methods
- Strong leadership and communication skills; experience managing or mentoring a team
- Familiarity with technical drawings, custom fit calculations, and conservation-grade standards
- Ability to safely handle high-value artworks with care and precision
- Skilled in the use of framing tools, including drills, cutting tools, and hand tools
- Able to lift and handle large, fragile frames and glazing materials
- Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and project coordination
