Description
Tina Kim Gallery seeks an experienced Director to lead the gallery's sales program across art fairs, exhibitions, private viewings, and institutional placements. Reporting to the gallery owner, the Director will drive revenue, cultivate a distinguished client and institutional base, and serve as primary liaison for a select roster of gallery artists. This is a senior leadership role requiring deep market knowledge, existing client relationships, and the ability to represent the gallery at the highest levels.
Responsibilities
Sales, Client Development, and Institutional Outreach
- Build and steward relationships with a global network of private collectors, advisors, and institutions, with an emphasis on proactive outreach and long-term cultivation
- Lead all aspects of the gallery's sales program, from initial client engagement through placement and post-sale follow-up
- Develop and execute targeted acquisition and placement strategies for primary and secondary market works
- Cultivate relationships with curators, directors, and acquisitions committees at museums and public institutions domestically and internationally
- Identify and pursue strategic placement opportunities for gallery artists, with an eye toward long-term collection and critical positioning
- Conduct secondary market and valuation research to advise clients and support consignment decisions
- Oversee the Sales team in maintaining client records in Artlogic, ensuring meticulous tracking of collection activity, fair attendance, artwork interest, and relationship history
- Direct the preparation of presentations, PDF proposals, catalogue mailings, and bespoke research materials for sales outreach
- Manage post-sale communications and coordinate with the registrars and junior staff to ensure smooth delivery of sold works, documents, and client gifts
Art Fairs
- In partnership with the owner, lead the gallery's art fair program, overseeing booth selection, presentation strategy, artist and work selection, and sales execution
- Manage pre-fair client and institutional outreach, including VIP previews and targeted contact campaigns
- Oversee preparation of sales materials, checklists, Artlogic inventory, and Dropbox folders in coordination with the art fair team
- Represent the gallery on the fair floor, managing booth presence, client meetings, and real-time sales decisions
Artist Liaison
- Serve as primary gallery liaison for 2+ gallery artists and estates, building close working relationships and serving as a trusted point of contact
- Coordinate with artists and/or estates on studio visits, inventory intake, exhibition planning, fair presentations, and catalogue projects
- Oversee the preparation and maintenance of artist fact sheets, including artwork descriptions, provenance, literature, and exhibition history, in collaboration with the research team
- Collaborate with the media team on artwork photography and the communications team on press materials and public-facing artist content
Leadership & Operations
- Manage and mentor junior sales staff, providing direction on client management, research, and professional development
- Partner with the gallery owner and Managing Director on strategic planning, staffing, and business decisions
- Collaborate across departments—communications, registration, art fairs, and exhibitions—to ensure cohesive execution of the gallery's program
Qualifications
- BA in Art History or related field; advanced degree a plus
- 8-10 years of gallery sales experience, with a demonstrated track record of client development, sales, and art fair management
- Existing relationships with collectors, advisors, and/or institutional contacts relevant to the gallery's program
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; polished and confident in client-facing settings
- Strong organizational and follow-through skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Bilingual proficiency in Korean or Mandarin is a plus, but not required
