Description
The Armour-Stiner Octagon House, a National Historic Landmark in Irvington, New York, is seeking a qualified candidate for Manager of Guided Tours.
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA or advanced degree is preferred, an emphasis in Architecture, Art History, Historic Preservation is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of and enthusiasm for 19th century American history, art, architecture, or design.
- Outstanding verbal communication and presentation skills for diverse audience ages and levels of knowledge.
- Interest or experience in leading interactive, non-traditional tours.
- Applicants must speak and read English fluently. Additional languages a plus.
- We are seeking candidates who are available to work weekends and holidays.
- Computer proficiency required. Knowledge of scheduling software a plus.
- Ability to stand for periods up to 120 minutes and lift loads of up to 20 pounds without assistance.
- Applicants must have a valid drivers' license or government-issued ID
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead guided tours of The Octagon House; accurately interpret its architecture, landscape, artifacts and collections.
- Manage day to day tour operations.
- Develop and maintain staff calendars
- Create a welcoming, hospitable atmosphere when greeting and checking in guests.
- Coordinate with Museum Director to hire, train and onboard new staff members.
- Complete administrative tasks related to tour bookings and promotion.
- Develop new tour content and expand museum merchandise offerings.
- Oversee sale transactions of merchandise.
- Work attire should be business casual clothing when working - no jeans, athletic wear, clothing with large or obvious logos, or anything distressed, ripped, or revealing.
- Adhere to and enforce guidelines stated in the staff handbook
The New York Times recently described the tour experience at The Armour-Stiner Octagon House as “absolutely delightful and inspiring.” All guided tours take place on the 3.3 acre site and include the interior and exterior of this one-of-a-kind historic home. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in 19th century American history, architecture, and/or art with prior experience with historic spaces and team management. Guided tours operate Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday) Please note this position requires weekend availability and a commitment of full time hours during the months of October through December.
