 Aperture will be offering a salary of $18 per hour to start for this position. These internships will start in July 2025 and end in December. This position is part-time at 24 hours a week.

Aperture Work Scholar Program Positions Description 

Four open positions: Editorial (Books), Education & Public Programs, Development, Design and Social  


Aperture is a nonprofit publisher that leads conversations around photography worldwide. From our base 

in New York, Aperture connects global audiences and supports artists through our acclaimed quarterly 

magazine, books, exhibitions, digital platforms, public programs, limited-edition prints, and awards. 

Established in 1952 to advance “creative thinking, significantly expressed in words and photographs,” 

Aperture champions photography’s vital role in nurturing curiosity and encouraging a more just, tolerant 

society. With a capital campaign and development of a strategic plan underway, Aperture is preparing to 

move from Chelsea to a new, permanent home on 380 Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side of 

New York City at the end of 2025. 


Aperture currently has four open work scholar positions in our program, within the following departments: 

Editorial Books, Education and Public Programs, Development, and Design and Social Video. For more

What You Can Expect to Learn - Editorial (Books) 

As a work scholar, you will be engaged primarily with the research, organization, and editorial 

process behind a major publication focused on the history of American photography.By the end 

of your term, you can expect to have developed an in-depth understanding of this specific project and to 

feel proud of your meaningful contributions—whether through research, fact-checking, proofreading, 

drafting material, database management, or assisting with image rights and captions. Our goal is for you 

to learn how a major book of significant importance is produced from the inception process to publication. 

Along the way, it is our hope that this opportunity sharpens your attention to detail and professional 

communication skills—both experiences that will serve you in whatever field you choose to pursue. 


What you can expect to learn - Education & Public Programs 

  • How to contribute to the development of new educational programs in support of Aperture’s mission. 
  • What role education plays on a programmatic level at a not-for-profit devoted to a wide array of  communication and creative endeavors. 
  • How to collaborate with artists to conceptualize, plan, promote, and manage programs. 
  • How to work with other departments to develop and promote educational programs. 
  • How to conduct online educational research. 
  • What visual literacy means and how to utilize it. 
  • How to organize and coordinate a call for entry from start to finish. 


What You Can Expect to Learn - Development 

  • Techniques and strategies used to attain development goals, both on fiscal and mission-driven levels 
  • Methods for donor research and grant writing 
  • Effective strategies for cultivation and stewardship of institutional and individual donors 
  • Skills for creating successful development materials and acknowledgment letters 
  • Knowledge of the art world and the philanthropy system 
  • Event planning and preparation skills 
  • Database and gift processing 
  • How to create and submit tracking forms and financial information for payment processing 
  • Aperture’s departmental meetings and protocol 


What You Can Expect to Learn - Design and Social Video 

  • How to communicate visual ideas and storytelling effectively, to both individual colleagues and a group 
  • Social media strategy and marketing experience 
  • How to create impactful content that fulfills Aperture’s mission, vision, and values. 
  • Branding and identity coherence across content creation 
  • Communication skills (with artists and coworkers) 
  • Time-management skills 
  • Design software skills 
  • Video editing skills
