Description
Tina Kim Gallery seeks a highly organized, detail-oriented Senior Registrar to manage aspects of domestic and international shipping for gallery exhibitions, museum/third-party exhibitions, art fairs, and post-sale logistics and serve as the gallery’s head preparator. The Senior Registrar will lead the registration and art handling teams, project manage all technical aspects of installation and production, and work collaboratively across departments to ensure the highest standards of care and efficiency. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-starter who is obsessed with process improvement and eager to shape workflows and systems at a growing gallery. The ideal candidate will bring at least five years of registration and production experience at a commercial gallery, a strategic, solutions-driven mindset, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and coordinate all aspects of artwork shipping, including domestic and international transportation, customs, and insurance.
- Oversee incoming and outgoing loans and consignments for gallery exhibitions, museum/third-party exhibitions, and fairs.
- Manage shipping logistics and on-site coordination for all fairs and off-site exhibitions.
- Execute detailed condition reports for incoming and outgoing exhibition loans and consignments
- Work closely with the sales team to manage post-sale shipping and client deliveries.
- Lead, mentor, and support registration and operations staff; foster professional development and maintain team efficiency.
- Oversee aspects of artwork and exhibition production in close collaboration with artist liaisons, gallery technicians, and external fabricators/curators
- Oversee all technical aspects of installations in close collaboration with gallery owner, creative director, registrars, art handlers, and external vendors, serving as the gallery’s exhibitions project manager
- Work closely with the Creative Director for all framing needs.
- Maintain meticulous records in the gallery’s database system (Artlogic)
- Develop and manage budgets related to shipping, storage, packing, and production.
- Manage conservation of artworks as needed.
- Negotiate contracts with vendors and maintain relationships with shippers, handlers, storage facilities, and fabricators.
- Ensure compliance with museum, insurance, and legal standards for artwork handling, packing, shipping, and documentation.
- Evaluate and implement registrar policies and best practices to support the gallery’s evolving needs.
Qualifications:
- 5–8 years experience as a registrar in a commercial art gallery setting; art fair experience required.
- Demonstrated experience managing and mentoring staff.
- Strong project management skills, with experience overseeing production and fabrication projects.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines.
- Expert knowledge of domestic and international shipping logistics, customs processes, and fine art insurance.
- Familiarity with condition reporting and best practices in art handling and installation.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in art database management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Bachelor's degree in Art History, Arts Administration, or a related field preferred.
