Description

The Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance has been a world leader in contemporary dance since the foundation of the Martha Graham Dance Company in 1926. The Center continues to foster Graham’s spirit of invention as it embraces a new vision that showcases classics by Graham alongside newly commissioned works. The Center actively works to create new platforms for contemporary dance and multiple points of access for audiences.

 

The Center includes not only the Company but the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, which continues to teach the Martha Graham Technique to students from all over the world, and Martha Graham Resources, which licenses some of Graham’s most iconic works to university and professional dance companies, and leads the Center’s efforts in audience engagement. Resources provides the opportunity for the dancers and audience members worldwide to experience Graham’s ballets and learn more about the Graham legacy.


Position Summary


The Director of Martha Graham Resources reports to the Executive Director. The Resources Director will grow the Center’s licensing activity, and will contract and staff the licensing of Graham movement, intellectual, and physical assets. The Director with work closely with artistic and School staff to create and disseminate educational and audience engagement activities and projects.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate a superior knowledge of Martha Graham Technique, repertory and legacy, have strong organizational and communication skills, research and writing skills, be able to meet and manage deadlines, possess attention to detail, and must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite. Knowledge of database usage or eagerness to learn this skill is a must.

 

The successful candidate will participate in the following activities:

 

  • Grow, contract, and staff the licensing of Graham assets 
  • Manage and maintain current archival digital materials
  • Manage and maintain a database for managing archival material
  • Provide access to the digital archive for qualified dance professionals
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, artistic and School staff, create and market audience enrichment activities


Qualifications


  • Professional experience with the Martha Graham Dance Company or equivalent group
  • Practical experience with the Martha Graham Technique and repertory, which may include performance of Graham repertory, professional level study of the Graham Technique, teaching Graham Technique and/or repertory, publishing commentary on Martha Graham and the Graham Company
  • Knowledge of the dance education community internationally
  • Knowledge of the performing arts community internationally
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the enhancement of arts in the United States
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Flexibility, initiative and good problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and independently as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
