Sikkema Malloy Jenkins, a leading contemporary art gallery located in the Chelsea arts district, is seeking a full-time Gallery Assistant. The successful candidate will be highly organized and detail-oriented, with excellent client service skills, a strong interest in contemporary art, and ability to multi-task. This role is a front-desk position and is an important contributor to overall gallery function and visitor experience.
This is a full-time, salaried position which includes health and dental benefits. The gallery’s regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10AM to 6PM. Extra hours are required for openings and other events.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as first point of contact for visitors to the gallery by welcoming guests and answering questions about the exhibition in an informed and professional manner
- Answering phones and directing calls in an efficient and friendly manner
- Facilitating timely opening and closing of the gallery, ensuring the gallery is fully resourced and presentable at the start and end of each day.
- Prepare and maintain materials relating to gallery programming, such as exhibition checklists, artist CVs, and valuations
- Draft and send communications to clients on behalf of Gallery Partners
- Accurately enter and maintain client information in gallery databases
- Assist with organizing and supporting events, such as exhibition openings and dinners
- Manage general gallery email inbox
- Update gallery website and online listings
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
Requirements:
- BA degree, preferably in Art History or a related field
- A thorough knowledge of and interest in modern and contemporary art
- Previous experience in a gallery, museum, auction house or other arts organization
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Mac OS; familiarity with database software (ArtLogic preferred), Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, preferred.
- Superior client service skills, including a professional and poised demeanor, an ability to interact with members of the public in a positive and friendly manner, and a professional email and phone manner
- Ability to work as part of a team to accomplish tasks quickly and efficiently
- Close attention to detail
- Strong communication, organizational, and time-management skills
- A demonstrable interest in and willingness to learn about the Gallery’s history, programming, and mission
