Exhibition highlights emerging immigrant artists and opens in downtown San Antonio, TX, on September 5.

The exhibition Courage, Valor, Mужество, Mужність, 勇气, opening on September 5 and running through October 25 at Russell Hill Rogers Galleries, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Southwest Campus in San Antonio, TX, features new work by 26 artists in the 2024 San Antonio cohort of NYFA’s Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program

The title identifies the theme of courage in English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, and Chinese, reflecting the native languages of immigrant and first-generation emerging artists in San Antonio and the surrounding region.

Works reflect a broad diversity of themes, methods, and materials in visual arts, dance, and spoken word. Some artists consider changing ideas of family and cultural conditions and the lived experience of home across global contexts, while others consider diverse ideas of conceptual engagement and artistic dynamism.

Over the last year, emerging artists selected for the program worked closely with established artists and arts professionals in workshops and through individual mentoring in themes focused on best practices in professional development as a working artist, toward negotiating the host of challenges and opportunities in new cultural contexts, and on pursuing original creative practices in new work for new audiences.

Since its inception in 2007, NYFA’s Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program has supported more than 1,000 artists from 76 countries and regions. The San Antonio program is presented in collaboration with UTSA Arts, the UTSA School of Art, Contemporary at Blue Star, Centro Cultural Aztlan, and Say Sí.

NYFA gives special thanks to our partner UTSA and Dr. Scott A. Sherer, Director of Exhibitions, UTSA, for helping the 2024 cohort organize this exhibition.
