Virtual Marathons are an incredible opportunity for artists from around the world to experience the high caliber NYSS Marathons from their respective homes and studios. Taught through a combination of Zoom and Padlet, these courses bring the rigorous exercises, profound insights, and deep connections of in-person Marathons to participants via virtual means. Artists of all levels are welcome to join. Virtual Marathons are offered as two-week sessions (10 days) in September, January, and during the summer months. Virtual Marathons are offered as one-week (5 consecutive days, Thursday through Monday) Intersession Marathons in November and March of each year.
This Marathon seeks to establish an approach to drawing specific to each individual – for example: where one person may build a drawing slowly with a light touch, another may use darker faster marks; where one person may be fascinated by perceptual drawing, another may be attracted to using photographs – the purpose of this course is to build on the students’ respective impulses and distill their thinking into ‘’pictorial’’ terms.
Each student will make a transcription from an old painting, draw a still life they arrange in their studio/home, draw an interior (whatever space they are in or have access to), and draw from a photo of their choosing. Beyond this, it will be up to the student’s own interest, with feedback from the instructor, to draw from any subject matter (still-life, interior, source imagery) that feels exciting to them.
The course will include discussions about Art History and the evolution of drawing over millennia, with more focus on the 16th – 20th centuries. The purpose of this course is to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of drawing – tone, planes, composition, scale, quality of mark etc. while at the same time becoming more specific about individual interests. The goal is to learn how to recognize and use these formal qualities in the search for one’s own vision and work.
