JANE SCHREIBMAN/Ladies of Quick Lime Kilns
Deep in the Rajasthani desert, more or less hidden from public view are the lime kilns. Those working the kilns, mostly women and teen age girls, are subject to a variety of health risks. They are inhaling the lime dust and sulphur gas emitted from the burning lime, They also suffer structural damage from the heavy weights of lime stone that is balanced on their head. Sometimes families live in rooms surrounding the kiln, where children happily play in the toxic lime powder.
